What Wire EDM Does

Wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) cuts conductive metal with a thin, electrically charged wire that never touches the part. A controlled series of electrical discharges erodes material along a programmed path, spark by spark, while deionized water flushes the cut. The wire is the tool, and the tool never dulls, deflects, or pushes on the workpiece.

That last part is the point. Because the process is electrical rather than mechanical, wire EDM cuts hardened and heat-treated metals with no cutting forces at all. Thin walls hold their shape. Fine details and small internal radii come out as programmed. Edges leave the machine essentially burr-free. For features that would distort, chatter, or need secondary deburring under conventional machining, wire EDM is the cleaner path.

Where Wire EDM Earns Its Place

Hardened and Heat-Treated Metals

Tool steels and heat-treated alloys are cut after hardening, in their final material condition. No post-machining heat treat distortion to chase, no re-cutting to recover a tolerance.

Thin Walls and Delicate Geometries

Features that cannot tolerate cutting forces hold their shape through an EDM cut. Thin walls, fine slots, and small internal radii come out as programmed.

Tight-Tolerance Secondary Features

Precision features added to parts already machined, turned, or fabricated elsewhere in the shop, with no cutting loads on the finished surfaces.

Burr-Free Production Edges

Edges leave the machine burr-free, which removes a deburring operation and the handling variation that comes with it.

Wire EDM works on conductive metals, which covers most of the materials already running through the shop: stainless and carbon steels, hardened tool steels, titanium, nickel-based and high-temperature alloys, aluminum, brass, and copper. Integrated With the Rest of the Shop

Wire EDM rarely stands alone. Most EDM work at JD Machine is one operation in a longer traveler: parts move between precision CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, wire EDM, and in-house assembly and testing without leaving the building. Processes are engineered offline using CAD/CAM and CNC program simulation software, with OEE and throughput tracking on every machine, so the EDM operation is planned, sequenced, and measured like everything else on the floor.
